The purpose of crafting in Pilgrimage of Embers is simple: to directly or indirectly aid combat in some way. By definition, crafting in games requires a minimum of two types: input and output. Input takes a common form as items, though it can be more abstract. Output is the result of the input(s), and usually takes the form of another item.
Thus far, there are a number of craft-related interfaces.
- Artisan's Counter. The primary interface for creating items from ingredients.
- Reinforcer's Workbench. Improving of weapons, armor, and sometimes other items.
- Mender's Tools. Repairing of weapons, armor, and sometimes other items.
- Ore Smelter. The melting and merging of metals, and sometimes other resources.
- Brewmaster's Contrivances. The brewing of potions and thrown flasks.
All of these interfaces can only be used when next to a soulgate.
This interface is where you'll likely do the majority of crafting. Tools, simple weaponry, consumable items, arrows and bolts... the standard items. There are uncraftable item types worth mentioning, which are most weapons and armor, but for good reason! I don't want craftable combat items to be obsolete once you find better armor. Instead, combat items will be found in the game world or as loot from monsters. You can then reinforce the item with the appropriate ingredients.
Item recipes have four different states. In order, they are:
- Unknown. These recipes won't show up in the above screen, as they must be discovered through the game world.
- Uncrafted. These will show up, but as blacked out icons. You must craft it to know what it is.
- Crafted. These have been crafted previously, and will show the item's name and icon.
- Refined. These can be crafted into improved forms of the previous item. To refine a recipe, the player must craft a recipe a certain amount of times. This may be arrows that do increased damage. However, not all recipes can be refined.
Assuming you have the necessary ingredients, clicking one of the buttons in the right window will send the crafted item to your inventory.
This interface is specifically for improving existing items. Though primarily for weapons and armor, other items may be modifiable. To start, you must have the required ingredients to reinforce an item. Additionally, The ingredients quantity and type will change per reinforcement level. Clicking the "Scrap Item" button will restore it to it's original state, but be warned that you will not receive the ingredients previously used.
This interface is for repairing items that have been completely broken. The primary ingredient is the Mender's Mucilage, but some special items may require something more. Weapons and armor that are only slightly damaged will be automatically repaired when resting at a soulgate.
This interface is for melting metals, and merging them with other resources. The top-left slot is for ore, the top-right is for modifiers, and the bottom is for fuel. Once you have your fuel placed, press the ignite button (right-side of fuel). The button will change to a bucket of water (extinguish), and the fuel will begin to burn. The temperature will start increasing, and the fuel will slowly run out (measured by fire in the center). If you're in a rush, using the bellows will increase the temperature and burn rate of the fuel. Once you put some ores in the top-left slot, the progress bar in the top-center will start increasing (provided the temperature is above the ore's melting point).
Fuels have unique properties, such as burn rate, temperature rate, burn time, and maximum temperature. Likewise, ores have different melting temperatures and speeds, and others require a modifying item to be melted into the proper item.
When the interface is open, smelted items will be sent directly to your inventory. Otherwise, they go to the Stonehold where you can collect them later. This also applies to brewing (below).
Brewing, though similar to the smelting interface, has some slight differences. The top-left slot is for the primary ingredient, the top-right is for the secondary ingredient, and the bottom is for the container. The button on the left will fill empty bottles in the bottom slot with water, or empty full bottles. The button on the right will start or stop the brewing process.
Unlike the ore smelter, ingredients that don't match a recipe will give you a failed potion, consuming the ingredients in the process. If you successfully brew a potion, the recipe will be added to the bottom section for viewing later.
